Enigin News - UK Firms and Organisations Face Energy Use Fines

ONE third of UK companies could miss the 30th September deadline for registering for the UK's energy efficiency scheme requiring them to reveal information on their energy use, this will result in fines of up to £5000 ($7,644) each, an environmental consultancy revealed yesterday.
The UK's mandatory Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRCEES), which began on April 1, forces businesses like banks, hotels, hospitals and schools to register with the UK's Environment Agency and monitor energy usage.
According to the UK government the scheme will reduce the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by four million tonnes annually by 202, while slashing corporate energy bills by £1 billion.
Apparently 6,000 of the 15,000 lower energy users affected by the scheme will not make the necessary information declaration to the agency. The penalty is a fine of £500 for each working day that they do not register in the scheme and make any necessary declarations.
David Symons, of environmental consultants WSP, stated: 'Our findings indicate a lack of awareness and engagement among participants could prevent thousands of companies from complying with the scheme on time'.
The CRCEES is one of two incentive schemes launched earlier in 2010, which the previous Labour government said was crucial to meeting the UK's stated target to cut emissions by 34% below 1990 levels by 2020.
