Enigin News - Tonga's Energy Efficiency Aims Boosted by REEEP Funding

THE Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (REEEP) are to help fund the Tonga's Energy Roadmap which will improve energy efficiency for the Kingdom.

The 10-year Tonga Energy Roadmap (TERM) plan represents a dramatic restructuring of the South Pacific island’s energy sector aiming at increasing energy efficiency, decreasing dependence on imported fossil fuels, and increasing renewable energy sources.

The REEEP funding will enable the roll-out of TERM, helping to drafting the legislative framework, and recommending how Tonga’s institutions need to be structured or modified to fulfill the aims of the Roadmap.

Lord Ma’afu, Tonga’s Minister of Lands, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate, said regarding REEP’s funding: “The provision of technical assistance for the legislative review is fundamental to the energy sector reform for the Kingdom of Tonga, and this project confirms REEEP’s status as a valuable development partner, reaffirming its commitment to helping Tonga towards a clean energy future.”

Martin Hiller, the Director General of REEEP, added: “We are really pleased to be taking such a strategic role in enabling the planning for Tonga’s energy future. We’re particularly interested because the Tonga Energy Roadmap could also become a blueprint for other Pacific Island states that are grappling with similar challenges.”
