Enigin News - Taiwanese Company Saves Over $47.5 Million on Energy Bills

TAIWANESE company Chimei Innolux, a world-leading TFT-LCD products manufacturer, saved over $47.5 million on their electricity bills last year, and in so doing won a national corporate energy conservation award.

Hsu Shu-fu, head of Chimei Innolux’s operations, said the company saved the money in its seven factory buildings:

“It is by no means a matter of luck that our company has been chosen for the award,” he said.

According to Hsu, the start of the global financial downturn two years ago was a major turning point in putting Chimei on the road to stronger energy conservation and carbon reduction.

Facing tens of millions of dollars in losses as a result of a falling order book, the company had to find ways to cut its costs, with energy-saving measures being its only real option.

Nevertheless, the need to cut energy to save money and reduce carbon emissions presented a dilemma for the company, as Hsu explained, following through on carbon cutting measures for the factories’ clean rooms would alter temperatures and moisture levels, thereby impacting on the production rate.

The choice lead to the company’s production and financial divisions getting into a heated argument over energy-conservation measures, Hsu revealed. Eventually Wang Jyh-chau, president of the company, instructed employees to act.

Besides developing new production process that reduced carbon emissions, the company turned energy saving retrofits, including installing energy-saving T5 lamps, as well as LED emergency lights and solar panels on the factories’ roofs.

“No stone was left unturned in trying to find ways to lower carbon emissions and cut energy consumption in order to reduce the company’s overall costs,” Hsu said.
