Enigin News - SustainabilityLive! Exhibition Stories

SUSTAINABILITYLIVE! Exhibition is taking place in Birmingham in the UK, with many energy saving technologies on display in the NEMEX part of the show.

Seminars and discussion theatres are held each day and during a panel discussion on “Energy efficiency - is it people or technology?” Simon Hill of consultants Hyder Environment related a story that shows people need to know what is happening to save energy – that includes all staff in a facility.

Hill related: "They think that now they're saving money so they might as well turn up the power, which isn't really the point.

"I used to work with a large confectioner and got a call from a colleague on Christmas day who asked me if I'd seen our power usage.

"It was not the first thing on my mind, but I turned on my computer and saw that on Christmas day with just a security guard watching the Queen's speech our power usage was like a normal day.

"A couple of days later we looked into and found out an air handling system was left running over the Christmas period. This was all because no one had told the shift manager it needed to be switched off at the end of the day."

Interestingly Enigin are exhibiting at the show (stand Q30), focusing on the power of their real-time energy monitor Eniscope to display energy use in real-time and in a way that any member of staff can understand, the ideal answer for the situation referred to by Simon Hill.

The Eniscope’s historical analysis also enables trends and patterns of energy use to be analysed and behaviour change to be implemented along with other hard-ware energy saving solutions, which can automatically control equipment.
