THE Cambridge-Isanti School District in Minnesota,USA, have received an award for a 30 percent improvement in energy saving.

During a school board meeting it was revealed that the school district joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of ENERGY STAR® Leaders, which is an elite group of organisations who have improved energy efficiency across all of its buildings.

School Board Superintendent Bruce Novak said:

“The Cambridge-Isanti School District is pleased to be named an EPA ENERGY STAR Leader, through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs.”

The District’s Energy Efficiency Coordinator, Nancy Johnson reported that the district had avoided spending over $1,560,000 on utilities through energy saving, a reduction of over 30 percent over the previous five and half years.

Johnson added: “That is funding we didn’t have to take out of our general fund."

ENERGY STAR Leaders are recognised by the EPA for improving the energy performance across their portfolio of buildings by ten percent or more.

The highest leaders recognition identifies those organisations whose energy management performance is in the top 25 percent of energy efficiency nationwide, based upon the average of the buildings in the portfolio. The Cambridge-Isanti School District is doing very well as they are in the top 10 percent nationwide.

Johnson said the energy conservation efforts success was due to the hard work of staff and students, plus the updating of lighting and equipment as well as changing behaviours.

The school reports that almost 100 per cent of their buildings have automated systems which have greatly contributed to their savings.

The district was also congratulated on its award through the regional EPA office in Chicago.

“The United States is currently facing high energy prices,” said Elham Tallackson with the Chicago EPA. “Energy efficiency is a leading approach on reducing global climate, reducing greenhouse emissions and saving money.

"The Cambridge-Isanti School District has been aggressive in making reductions, and students are also going home and making adjustments in their own homes.”
