Enigin News - Retailer M&S Reveal a £50m Return from Environmental and Efficiency Plan

UK supermarket and retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) has reported on progress of its Plan A - their eco and ethical programme launched in 2007 which included energy efficiency.

M&S report that out of the 100 targets they set they have achieved 62 of them, while 30 are ‘on plan’, with seven behind schedule.

Since the launch of Plan A, M&S has cut its carbon emissions by eight per cent and 20 per cent per sq ft of sales floor. This has been achieved by improving energy efficiency by 19 per cent, reducing emissions from refrigeration systems by 18 per cent and with 40 per cent of the business' electricity coming from renewable sources via green tariffs.

These efficiencies along with other environmentally aware targets has put £50m of profit back into the business, hence M&S has now increased Plan A as Chairman Sir Stuart Rose explained:


“We’re now pushing ahead with our new, bigger and bolder version of Plan A with 80 new commitments and the ultimate goal to become the world’s most sustainable retailer by 2015.”


Rose also said: “Plan A is making a real difference to the environment and for our customers, employees and people working in our supply chains.

“We’ve introduced products and services to help customers live more sustainably, increased our contribution to local communities and, this year, generated £50m additional profit which has been invested back in the business.

“We’ve made excellent progress, but there’s no time to stand still. It is clear that evidence of environmental damage and social inequality has increased since we launched Plan A.”
