Enigin News - Pakistan's Energy Conservation Plan Extended

THE Pakistani federal government on Tuesday decided to maintain two-day weekly off and early markets’ closure by another three months till Oct 31, 2010.

Pakistan has been facing stringent measures to reduce energy use since April, when office closures and early closing of markets were implemented, with stronger punishments added as these rules were ignored - much to many businesses dismay.

The decision to extend the scheme was made at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. The chief ministers, federal ministers and top officials also attended the meeting.

The participants of the meeting approved all the decisions made in April this year as part of the energy conservation plan.

Gilani in his opening remarks stated that the present government has added 1,708 MW to the national grid while additional 2,000 MW are to be added during the current year through the extension of the plan..

He pointed out that about 1,500 MW of electricity is reportedly being saved per day, adding that savings due to Saturday closure is about 500 MW, which has provided much-needed relief to industry, agriculture and household consumers.

In financial terms he said that the government is saving about US $150 million in operating costs.
