Enigin News - Office Buildings and Large Hospitals can cut Energy by 50%

U.S. COMMERCIAL buildings and large hospitals can cut their energy use by at least 50 per cent, saving millions, according to reports from the Department of Energy (DOE).

Two technical reports published by the U.S. DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory recommend simple energy saving measures to produce much needed reduction in costs.

One report, the Technical Support Document: Strategies for 50% Energy Savings in Large Office Buildings, examined large office buildings in 16 cities right across the U.S., and assessed energy saving measures across different climates.

The report recommended reducing lighting power density through using occupancy sensors to control lighting, particularly in less used areas, and installing energy-efficiency equipment, utilising auto shut off when not in use. These measures could lead to a 50 per cent energy saving.

Similar measures were also recommended in a second report, Large Hospital 50% Energy Savings: Technical Support Document, to achieve savings of 50-60% across varying climatic regions across the country.

In hospitals, energy-saving designs like demand controlled ventilation, more efficient pumps and integration of subsystems to achieve whole-building performance would produce substantial savings.
