Enigin News - Jakarta Needs to be Energy Efficient

DATA from the Jakarta Industry and Energy Agency shows the Indonesian capital needs at least 4,600 megawatts of electricity, which is currently supplied by power plants in Muara Karang and Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta.

A major problem is that both plants have a total maximum capacity of 2,000 megawatts, which can mean constant blackouts.

Haris Pindratno, the agency’s head of electricity, energy, oil and gas division, said the remaining electricity demand was supplied by PLN’s Jawa Madura Bali networks and various other generators, or an estimated 30,000 machines.

He said the city’s proposal to have a power plant in three alternative locations — Damar Island, Untung Jawa Island in the Thousand Islands and Marunda — had not received approval from the State Owned Enterprises Ministry.

“The proposal is driven by a limited capacity of supply from PLN, the annual increasing demand in electricity and the aging power plant in Muara Karang and Tanjung Priok,” Haris said.

While the city’s landmark areas enjoy the brightest lighting amid the energy shortage, much of the populace is upset as streets in the less luxurious areas have dimmer, or even no lighting, plus inconsistent supply is not good for commerce and industry.

One of the easiest, quickest and cheapest ways to generate more energy is to use less, hence become efficient in the use of the energy you have by wasting less or using it more productively.

Energy efficiency would certainly be the answer to Jakarta’s energy supply problem, using energy efficient technology to make sensible investments in the right solutions for commerce, industry, the public sector and residential districts.

The cost is minimal compared to the capital cost of new power generation.
