Enigin News - Ireland add another €30m for Energy Efficiency

IRELAND’S Minister for Energy, Pat Rabbitte, announced yesterday that an additional €30 million in funding is being made available for commercial and domestic energy efficiency programmes.

Rabbitte also claimed this initiative will create new jobs and see energy bills fall significantly, along with the environmental benefits the move is also seen as a way of boosting Ireland’s battered economy.

Rabbitte was speaking at the launch of a Better Energy programme, which aims to make energy efficiency retrofitting less complex and more affordable, according to the Irish Times.
Rabbitte added that the programme would streamline three existing grant schemes, support jobs, help the country achieve its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and make it easier to manage utility bills.

The Irish Times reported that Rabbitte said the extra €30 million in Irish Government funding would increase the allocated amount for retrofitting to €90 million this year, and would support 2,000 new jobs, most of which would come from the moribund construction sector.

The minister hopes the Irish Construction Industry Federation (CIF) will play a role in encouraging energy efficiency upgrades.
“We have met with the CIF and asked what they can bring to the party. We will be expecting more than them simply looking for work.”

Referring to the expected ever increasing costs of energy and concerns of security of supply, Rabbitte added, “the way we use energy is no longer simply a question of environmental responsibility but one of economic necessity.

“Every euro spent by......businesses on energy efficiency not only brings about long-term energy savings but also helps support jobs and indigenous companies.”

“Ireland needs a strong green building sector, founded upon sustainable principles. Better Energy [programme] will help drive this agenda by building upon existing successful domestic grant programmes to take the scale of activity to a new level,” concluded Rabbitte.
