Enigin News - Ghana Saves $38 Million Through Energy Efficiency Programme

Ghana has saved around $38 million in an energy conservation exercise which started in 2007.

The programme, among other things, saw the replacement of incandescent bulbs with energy-saving ones throughout the country. The exercise resulted in the conservation of 124 mega-watts of energy.

Victor Owusu, public affairs officer of the Energy Commission, said findings had revealed that one-third of electricity produced in the country was wasted due to the use of inefficient equipment, as well as inefficient lighting.

He noted that electrically driven equipment throughout Ghana had often exceeded its lifespan and was inefficienct; unfortunately much of the purchased used and inefficient equipment came from outside of the country.

Mr. Owusu reiterated his Commission's desire to reduce the consumption of electricity adding that "Ghana is rated the best in electricity conservation, in Sub-Sahara-Africa."

Despite this claim they still need to make major energy efficiency advancements as the future of energy cost will continue to rise dramatically.
