Enigin News - EU Energy Directive Revives!

THE European Union’s draft Energy Efficiency Directive was being diluted by member states, or so we reported last week, but EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger claims it is still possible.

The European Commission and the Danish EU presidency also said the Directive couls "realistically" strengthen and see the light of day over the next couple of months, despite the consistent weakening by some states.

Oettinger told journalists, "I think realistically a solution is possible under the Danish presidency," after the informal energy council meeting in Denmark on Friday.

Oettinger reckons that the deal for a 20 percent energy savings target is a possibility by the end of June, ahead of the end of Denmark’s EU presidency.

The Commissioner added that during the talks in Denmark, none of the bloc’s member states presented oppositon to the proposals - saying: "The real message was that there was no blockade from anybody.

"My hope is we can come to a solution in June in an ambitious manner that will realise this 20 percent target."

The Danish presidency claim that he fact that the directive will help drive growth, creating jobs in upgrades in building energy efficiency, and in reducing dependency on foreign oil and gas supplies were beginning to overcome fear over the financial costs.

Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building Martin Lidegaard said, "I feel this is the most constructive discussion we have ever had in the Council (of ministers) on this file.

"There is still a lot of work to be done, a lot of compromises to be achieved, and it will take flexibility from our side but also from the parliament's side and the Commission's side if we are actually to succeed in landing this directive."
