Enigin News - Energy Saving Lighting Trial Returns 60% Saving

LUDHIANA city, in Punjab India, have had a 60% saving on energy through a trial of energy-efficient lighting for their street lights.

City officials have asked the Indian Bureau of Energy Efficiency
(BEE) to consult for the trial, by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.

The city installed around 20 LED lights on a trial basis in various areas.

There are around 75,000 streetlights in the city. In the city itself, they have purchased power from the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) for streetlights and they hope to need less then half the amount of power currently bought if energy efficient lights are installed.

The project costs Rs 70-crore (around $15 million) and is to be started initially within the Ludhiana province. The city which
would then recover the money through savings in electricity bills over
six years. The project was taken on after a recommendation from the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA).
