Enigin News - Energy Saving Leads To $60,000 For Hospital

It is a year since President Obama's Recovery Act and the US health secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, has highlighted a federal project to increase energy efficiency at a Shriners Hospital that will eventually save more than $60,000 per year.

The Erie Shriners Hospital, Erie, Pennsylvania, received funding under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to trim its operating costs by replacing obsolete equipment with more energy-efficient systems.

The hospital treats children with serious orthopaedic issues at no cost. The Erie location is one of 22 Shriners Hospitals across the U.S. offering specialised intensive treatment to children.

The hospital received a $250,000 PA Conservation Works grant to improve its lighting, air handling and boiler systems.

PA Conservation Works grants were awarded to facilities that proposed energy-saving projects resulting in a 25% or more reduction in energy use.

The hospital's project will save 36% of energy. Once complete, the hospital estimates annual savings of $62,000 in utility costs.

The project will cut the hospital's electrical energy use by 315,367kWh and consumption of natural gas by 3,380 million cubic feet annually, and will prevent the use of 28,000gal of water annually.
