Enigin News - "Energy Efficiency is Vital for our Future" - EU and Ukraine Conference

Enigin News -

“ENERGY efficiency should be a no-brainer for businesses. Companies can immediately save money, often at little or no upfront cost” so reports the Financial Times.

In the article by the FT’s Environment Correspondent Fiona Harvey she gathers the evidence that businesses should act on energy efficiency for their current good and to secure their futures.

The article highlights how simple measures such as turning off equipment can save money for little or no upfront costs, but Harvey also points out that with more complex measures, requiring an initial outlay, they can make even greater savings which are almost always permanent – producing improvements to the company’s assets and processes that continue to save money year after year.

Ben Warren of Ernst and Young is quoted, stating:

“Energy efficiency investments provide the opportunity for businesses to realise real-time cost savings, as well as managing longer-term exposure to carbon cost and the risk of volatile energy prices in the future.”

Warren’s words should focus the attention of business leaders to take action on energy efficiency.

Harvey underlines these points by referring to the UK retail chain Marks and Spencer, who through their environmental programme have saved £50 million ($77 million) and the Hilton Hotel chain in the UK and Ireland saving £3.8 million in the first three years of their energy efficiency drive.

The article also refers to the value of commercial buildings becoming energy efficient, with the selling prices of energy efficient buildings increasing by 8 per cent and their rental values rising between 16 to 20 percent.

As the article reasoned, becoming energy efficient should be a “no-brainer” for business leaders.
