Enigin News - Energy Efficiency Cheapest Way to Generate Energy - UK Energy Secretary

THE UK’s new Energy Secretary told the BBC today, “We must make sure we are much energy efficient because the cheapest way to generate energy is to save energy.

“By doing those two courses of action (renewable and energy efficiency) I believe we can make our national security more secure as well, because we will be more independent of key energy requirements.”

In an interview of BBC’s Radio 4 early news programme the new Energy Secretary Liberal Democrat (Lib Dem) Chris Huhne accepted that he may oversee a new wave of nuclear power station construction, something which the Lib Dems had previously opposed.

The new UK coalition government is due to hold its first cabinet meeting today with the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats (Lib Dems) working together to run the country. Energy concerns will be near the top of the items to be discussed.

In the interview, apart from the nuclear power debate, Huhne referred to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

He pointed out that as an island nation and on the western edge of Europe the UK has plenty of potential for tidal, wave and wind power generation. He feels it is vital to proceed with these schemes as the UK, like most nations, are facing an energy shortfall for the future.

Also by pursuing energy efficiency, sea and wind power generation Huhne underlined the national security concerns over relying too heavily on imported energy supplies from other nations.

The Lib Dems will now maintain their opposition to nuclear power while permitting the Government to pass laws that make new nuclear construction possible. They will abstain in parliamentary votes.
