Enigin News - Debswana Diamonds Aim to Reduce Energy Consumption

DIAMOND mining giant, Debswana Diamond Company, is making long-term plans to reduce its total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 percent by the year 2020.

Botswana based Debswana, the world's leading producer of diamonds by value, has a mission to mine and recover diamonds safely and responsibly, and are now looking to act responsibly by developing their strategy to improve energy efficiency, saving energy costs as well as protecting the environment.

The energy efficiency is driven by the company’s growth. which increases their energy costs while also putting pressure on Botswana’s faltering energy supply.

Debswana hosted a workshop at Mmokolodi Game Reserve where they presented and debated their 20:20 Energy Conservation Strategy.

Addressing attendants at the workshop, which was themed, “Use only what is needed”, Debswana Managing Director, Blackie Marole, said that in line with their mission, the strategy highlighted three important areas of focus, environmental sustainability, social sustainability and Business Sustainability.

“This requires Debswana to do everything possible to prevent or minimise, mitigate or otherwise remedy any harmful impact of Debswana’s operation on people and the planet, consistent with our company’s overriding goal of ZERO HARM,” Marole explained.

Enigin Partner Matsotso Vuso, of Nyamezela Group from South Africa attended the workshop and will be able to provide first class energy saving advice and technology from Enigin PLC to support Debswana with their energy saving programme.

The company is using records of the company’s 2008 consumption levels as a bench mark for the reductions.

Over 70 participants from Debswana were amongst the invited guests in the energy sector from both the private and the public sectors.
