Enigin News - British Colombia Introduce Program for Energy Efficiency

The utility company BC Hydro, Canada will introduce a new program to help the British Colombia (B.C.) industrial sector save electricity over the next four years – enough to meet the annual power needs of close to 20,000 homes.

The Power Smart Partners Transmission program will offer incentives and rebates for their customers in the pulp and paper, mining, solid wood, manufacturing and oil and gas industries to help manage and reduce energy use, while generating conservation savings that benefit all BC Hydro customers.

“Industry in B.C. is energy intensive and there are huge opportunities here to help meet our conservation goals, and at the same time contribute to industry competitiveness,” said Minister Blair Lekstrom, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. “Overall, this program has a net benefit savings of $120 million compared with the cost of purchasing new electricity supply.”

The recent Clean Energy Act means that BC Hydro must meet 66% of state’s electricity needs through efficiency and conservation by 2020.

“The Power Smart Partners Transmission program is designed to encourage efficiency and conservation by helping customers with the initial investment in projects and enabling activities that will continue to provide consistent financial savings year-after-year,” said Lisa Coltart, executive director of Power Smart and Customer Care for BC Hydro.

Customers will have the opportunity to receive up to 100% funding for energy efficiency projects under $1 million and up to75% over $1 million. As well as the financial incentives, the program promotes an integrated energy management approach to audit energy use, set targets, monitor energy use and increase employee awareness and education.

BC Hydro estimates that the industrial sector uses a third of the electricity in B.C. each year, but is responsible for 45% of the annual Power Smart savings.
