Enigin News - Australian Study Reveals Benefits Of Energy Efficiency

Improving energy efficiency, is a cost efficient answer for Australia to cut greenhouse gasses.

Australia’s non-profit organisation ClimateWorks will release research today that estimates the cost of cutting the country’s carbon emissions to 25% on 2000 levels by 2020 could be as low as $1.8 billion, $185 (US $170) per household.

ClimateWorks says a large percentage of the required cuts could be achieved by measures that would produce a net saving for business.

The report released by ClimateWorks argues that substantial reductions in emissions could be achieved by improving energy efficiency in buildings, industry and transport that offer net savings to businesses. Changing behaviour, would also cut emissions along with tree planting.

The report is likely to reignite the debate between the government and the opposition over climate change, as the two parties have clashed over a carbon pollution reduction scheme, which would create a market price for carbon, and propose direct action, such as planting trees.

The Australian government has committed to a cut of 5 per cent by 2020, promising to go higher, depending on what the rest of the world does, but its climate change adviser Ross Garnaut argues cuts of 25 per cent are needed to keep the global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius.
