Enigin - Council To Reduce Carbon Through Energy Efficiency To Avoid Charges

A staggering £400,000 could be the price that South Tyneside council bosses will have to pay, should they fail to achieve massive carbon emissions cuts.

Energy efficiency can help reduce the amount of carbon emissions while giving businesses the opportunity to save money at the same time. A league table would ensure that wastful councils get named and shamed, according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and that their bills be increased.

With the current pollution levels in North East England, councils would have to pay out more than £5 million between them in the 1st year as a result of everything from inefficient heating systems to running heavy diesel vans. Newcastle Council's most recently available figures show it could have to hand over more than £700,000 to cover the cost of pollution that comes as a result of running a major city authority.
