Enigin Can Help In The Bahamas

With more of a focus now on doing business in an environmentally-friendly way, companies in Grand Bahama may soon have the opportunity to gain certification in a local 'going green' program spearheaded by the Bahamas National Trust.

Chairman of the regional branch of BNT, Karin Sanchez, explained that the Green Certification Program came about because of the increasing demand for green products and services. The BNT has partnered with the Grand Bahama Port Authority, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment for the project.

"The four partners met and we came up with things that we thought were necessary for companies to go green; things that can be done like energy saving," she shared.

As far as energy efficiency is concerned Enigin have the perfect real-time energy monitor in the Eniscope to help businesses in Grand Bahama, or anywhere else for that matter, measure what energy they can save through considered actions and the implementation of the right energy saving products.

Businesses seeking to become certified will be provided with several guidelines that will ensure that they meet environmental requirements in various aspects of their operations. They will be encouraged to be proactive and begin taking the necessary steps in order to pass the inspections.

Program co-chair Cheri Wood explained that the program was modelled after a similar initiative in Santa Monica, California.

"The last thing we wanted to do was roll out something that wasn't 100 percent supported by the city and all of the partners and something that we would set guidelines and then people couldn't follow them because the things weren't available," she said.

"At the end of the pilot, after gathering all the information we are now at the point where we realized that we really have to build a solid infrastructure on the island in order for us to roll this out in a larger capacity to bigger companies and be more successful at it. We need the products and services to support everything that we need," she added.

Wood said as plans progress, the project has grown by leaps and bounds. The Committee has a number of meetings lined up with some companies that are interested in getting on-board to support the initiative.

“We need to be able to create the demand for certain services and products so that the suppliers of those services and products can have business to support them.

"So if we get a couple of larger companies on-board then all the smaller companies can have access to this great new way of doing business. So that's what we're building right now," she said.

It is hoped that by September, formal certification will be available for participating companies.
